5 Artists, 1 Love – A Retrospective at AGA

Black History Month art show back for first time at Art Gallery of Alberta

Edmonton, Alberta—Edmonton’s Black History Month art show – 5 Artists, 1 Love – returns, this time to a great new location: the Art Gallery of Alberta (2 Sir Winston Churchill Square). Now celebrating its fifth year, the exhibit is an integral part of Edmonton’s Black History Month festivities honouring the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present. The exhibit runs from February 4 to March 3, 2012.

For curator Darren Jordan, bringing 5 Artists, 1 Love to the new Art Gallery of Alberta is a dream come true.

“Strong support from the Edmonton community has enabled us to bring 5 Artists, 1 Love to the Art Gallery of Alberta,” says Jordan. “Now that we’re at one of the city’s most incredible arts venues, we’re confident even more people will be exposed to the amazing work of Edmonton’s Black artists.”

This year’s run of the exhibit kicks off with an opening reception on February 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. Admission is free and the event provides an intimate opportunity to meet the artists.

Immediately following the reception at 8 p.m. will be United Colours of Soul, a musical gala taking place in the AGA’s Ledcor Theatre. Some of Edmonton’s finest musicians and spoken-word poets will transport the audience through a journey of Black music and experiences at this unique event. Gala tickets are $30 and can be purchased at Tix on the Square by calling 780-420-1757 or online by visiting www.tixonthesquare.ca.

This year’s exhibit is a retrospective, an all-star jamsession featuring artists who have had works in past 5 Artists, 1 Love shows. Thirteen artists will submit onepiece to the exhibit, along with a piece for “The Wall.”The Wall welcomes works from any and all artists focusing on this year’s theme: The Civil Rights Movement.

“The Black History Month art show provides a showcase for local Black artists, but it’s also a way to highlight cultural diversity in our community,” says Jordan. “By coming together at events like 5 Artists, 1 Love and our United Colors of Soul gala, we can celebrate, inspire and nurture the importance of collaboration, artistic and otherwise.”

Artists interested in contributing a 12×12 inch piece for the Wall’s “The Civil Rights Movement” theme can do so by contacting Darren Jordan by phone at 7802383699 or by email at misterdjordan@yahoo.com. Gallery ready 12×12 canvasses can be purchased at local art stores. The submission deadline is January 20, 2012.
